PSP games feel much better with a real controller. PPSSPP supports PlayStation, Xbox and most Bluetooth or USB gamepads, and maps many of them automatically. If buttons are wrong or the stick doesn’t work, here’s how to set everything up.
1. Connect the controller to your phone
Pair it over Bluetooth first. Our guide shows how for PS5, PS4 and Xbox controllers. Then open PPSSPP and press a button: if the menu moves, PPSSPP can see the controller.
2. Map the buttons
- Go to Settings → Controls → Control mapping.
- You see every PSP button (Up, Down, Left, Right, Circle, Cross, Square, Triangle, L, R, Start, Select) and the analog stick directions.
- Tap a button’s + (or its current mapping) and press the button you want on your controller.
- Do this for each button. For the analog stick, map An.Up / An.Down / An.Left / An.Right by pushing your left stick in each direction.
- Go back. PPSSPP saves the mapping automatically.
| PSP button | PlayStation controller | Xbox controller |
|---|---|---|
| Cross ✕ | Cross | A |
| Circle ○ | Circle | B |
| Square □ | Square | X |
| Triangle △ | Triangle | Y |
| L / R | L1 / R1 | LB / RB |
| Start / Select | Options / Create (Share) | Menu / View |
| Analog stick | Left stick | Left stick |
3. Useful extra mappings
Below the PSP buttons, the same screen has PPSSPP functions you can put on spare buttons:
- Pause: open the PPSSPP menu (put it on the PS / Xbox button or R3).
- Fast-forward: skip slow cutscenes (L2 works well).
- Save state / Load state: quick saves on L3 / R3.
- Right analog stick: some games use it for the camera through a setting; map it under the “Right analog” options if the game supports it.
4. Hide the on-screen buttons
Go to Settings → Controls and turn off On-screen touch controls, or turn on the option to hide them when a controller is used.
Problems and fixes
- The stick moves on its own (drift): raise the analog deadzone in Settings → Controls → Analog stick settings.
- Character walks slowly: the stick is mapped to the D-pad, or the game needs the full analog range. Check the analog limiter isn’t on.
- Buttons are swapped: some Japanese games use Circle to confirm. Change Settings → System → Confirmation button.
- Input lag: use Vulkan and set Buffer graphics commands to 1 or “No buffer”. More in our PPSSPP settings guide.
- Controller not detected at all: restart the phone with the controller paired, or try a USB cable with an OTG adapter.
