High ping makes online games like Free Fire, Call of Duty Mobile, PUBG Mobile and eFootball feel unplayable: you shoot first and still lose. Ping is how long data takes to reach the game server and come back. Here’s what actually lowers it, and what doesn’t.
First: is it ping or FPS?
| What you see | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Players teleport, shots don’t register, high ms number | Network lag (ping): keep reading |
| The whole game stutters or feels choppy | FPS lag: see how to increase FPS |
| Smooth at first, then laggy after 15 minutes | Overheating: see how to keep your phone cool |
How to lower your ping
- Pick the closest server. In the game settings, choose the server region nearest to you. Distance is the biggest part of ping.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi. If your router has a 5 GHz network (often with “5G” in the name), use it. It’s faster and less crowded than 2.4 GHz, but works best in the same room as the router.
- Get closer to the router. Walls and floors weaken Wi-Fi. Fewer walls means more stable ping.
- Stop other downloads. Someone streaming in 4K or a big download on the same Wi-Fi causes ping spikes. Pause updates on your phone too.
- Restart the router. Unplug it for 30 seconds. It’s an old fix, but it works more often than it should.
- Try a USB-C ethernet adapter. Many Android phones support wired internet with a cheap USB-C to ethernet adapter. A cable is the most stable connection you can get.
- On mobile data, find a good signal. 4G/5G ping depends on signal strength and how busy the tower is. Fewer bars means higher ping. If 5G is unstable where you are, try forcing 4G.
- Turn off battery saver and data saver. They can limit background network activity and slow your connection.
- Play outside peak hours. Evenings are when networks are busiest. Ping is often better earlier in the day.
No. DNS only finds the server’s address when you connect. It doesn’t change how fast data travels during a match. A different DNS can help pages load faster or fix a connection error, but it won’t lower your in-game ping.
Most free “ping booster” or “game VPN” apps can’t make your connection faster. A VPN adds a stop on the way, so ping usually goes up. Only use one if your normal route to the server is very bad, and avoid any that ask for unnecessary permissions.
What is a good ping?
| Ping | How it feels |
|---|---|
| Under 50 ms | Excellent: ideal for shooters |
| 50–100 ms | Good: fine for most games |
| 100–150 ms | Playable, but you will notice it |
| Over 150 ms | Laggy: look at the fixes above |
FAQ
How do I reduce ping in mobile games?
Choose the closest server, use 5 GHz Wi-Fi close to the router, stop other downloads, restart the router, or use a USB-C ethernet adapter for the most stable connection.
Does a VPN reduce ping?
Usually not. A VPN adds an extra stop between you and the game server, so ping often goes up.
Is Wi-Fi or mobile data better for gaming?
A good Wi-Fi connection is usually more stable. Strong 4G or 5G can also be fine, but ping changes with signal strength and how busy the network is.
