PPSSPP Lagging? 12 Fixes for Slow Games on Android

Most PSP games run at full speed on any phone from the last few years. When a game is slow, the cause is nearly always a setting that’s too heavy for your phone, a hot phone, or one game that needs a special tweak. Try these fixes in order and check the speed after each one.

First, measure

Turn on Settings → Graphics → Show FPS counter (or “Performance counter”). PSP games run at 60 or 30 FPS, and the speed % should be 100%. Now you can see which fix actually helps.

The fixes

  1. Use the Vulkan backend. Settings → Graphics → Backend → Vulkan. It’s faster on most phones. If a game shows glitches, try OpenGL for that game only.
  2. Lower the rendering resolution. 1x is the original PSP resolution and the fastest. Try 2x on mid-range phones. Higher values look sharper but cost a lot of speed.
  3. Turn off post-processing. In Graphics → Display layout & effects, set the effect to Off. Shaders like FXAA or CRT cost FPS.
  4. Turn off texture upscaling. Texture upscale type → Off. It’s one of the heaviest options.
  5. Set Texture filtering to Auto. Max quality settings look nicer but can slow weaker GPUs.
  6. Try Skip GPU Readbacks. In Graphics → Speed hacks. It fixes big slowdowns in some games, but can cause graphics bugs in others. If that isn’t enough, Skip buffer effects is a stronger last resort, but many games don’t render correctly with it.
  7. Try frame skipping. Set Frame skipping to 1. The game looks a little less smooth but plays at the right speed. Use it only if nothing else helps.
  8. Turn off battery saver. Power saving modes slow the processor down. Also check your phone’s game mode isn’t set to “battery” or “power saving”.
  9. Let your phone cool down. Hot phones throttle hard. Take the case off and don’t play while charging. See how to stop overheating.
  10. Close background apps and restart the phone if it’s been on for days.
  11. Update PPSSPP. New versions regularly fix slow games. Get the latest from the Play Store or our PPSSPP download.
  12. Make a game-specific config. Some games need their own settings. In the game list, long-press the game → Create game config, then change settings while that game is running. They apply to that game only.

Sound crackling or slow?

Crackling sound usually means the game is running below 100% speed; the fixes above solve it. If speed is 100% and the sound still crackles, go to Settings → Audio and try a larger audio buffer, or switch the audio backend.

Only one game is slow?

Some PSP games are simply heavier than others, especially ones with lots of screen effects. Use a game config (fix 12) with 1x resolution and Skip GPU Readbacks on for that game only, so your other games still look sharp.

FAQ

Why is PPSSPP slow on my phone?

Usually the rendering resolution is too high, a post-processing effect or texture upscaling is on, or the phone is hot or in battery saver mode. Lower the resolution to 1x and turn effects off first.

Is Vulkan or OpenGL better for PPSSPP?

Vulkan is faster on most phones. If a game shows graphics glitches, switch only that game to OpenGL with a game config.

Does PPSSPP Gold run faster?

No. Gold and the free version use the same emulator and run games at the same speed.
